Happy New Year and hopefully a wonderful 2026 ahead. We wish all the best t our clients and other people reading this blog. We’ve been working on a few apps with payments involved.
We’ve been researching that have led us to have to explore the costs for payments. We have been investigating how to get the best value for most users return return. Ideally we try to get the best return on investment.
We we are often surprised that people do not understand how much Apple will take from an app payment. It can be 30% with Google play the price the percentage is is only took 15%. For PayPal just about 2% +20p so, that is a big difference in your profit margin the other options available to like stripe and Go Cardless that offer services in the UK
The importance thing to remember about Apple is that they want you in their ecosystem. If you have a subscription in the app, you will have to pay 30% to them that they request.
However, we’ve Google you’ll probably only have to pay 15% on the App Store.
This is for anything including in app payments. So that’s quite substantial as well as Apple.
So now you know if you’re selling small things then the Apple and Google pay isn’t too bad but once you get to the to the thousands of pounds that it becomes more costly.
Simplified the costs in each platform
- Web = like stripe on go cardless about 2% +20p
- Google Play Store = 15%
- Microsoft Store = 15%
- Apple App Store = 30%
How do you get around the Apple 30% commission? Well there are two ways we have seen apps done.
1 Only Fans put the app as a download on the website, but it is just a website and not a real app. It’s a PWA (Progressive Web App).. Their app is NOT on the app stores.
2 When on iOS or iPadOS this card game has Apple Pay as the main feature on a website but allowing other options.

Consumer Perspective
How do you feel about this situation as a consumer?
As a consumer, when you buy a products, you need to know realise that you could be costing your supplier money. Just by buying from Google Play or Apple App Store.
But obviously the convenience helps you with the quick experience from in app payment.
We did one calculation and we thought that her foot for a game of footy on app for £7 .
If we purchased on the web, it would only be 22p, but with Apple App Store in app payment they would lose £2.20
